Samsung to launch 8-inch Galaxy Note tablet to counter iPad Mini

Samsung-GALAXY-NOTE-10Samsung seems to be readying its second Note series tablet to counter the Apple’s cheaper iPad Mini. This tablet from South Korean manufacturer carries the model number GT-N5100 and will be called Galaxy Note 8.0.

According to a report in Sammobile, this alleged Android tablet will be sold in Wi-Fi and 3G versions, same as company’s earlier tablets and feature S-Pen stylus support, which is a highlight of Note series smartphones and slates.

The report further adds that Note GT-N5100 will come with 8.0-inch 1280×800p Super Clear LCD, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, 2GB RAM, 16/32 internal storage and microSD card slot.  There is no word on the processor, but we expect it to be at-least quad-core, considering other specs.

Other specs include 4600 mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and Jelly Bean Android 4.2. These specs are pretty decent and it would be interesting to see how Samsung prices it to counter Apple’s iPad Mini, which retails for $329 (cheapest model). This Note 8.0 launch would also be interesting as rumours suggest that Apple is planning to announce second-gen iPad Mini in March, which if true, will be the real target of Samsung than the current-gen iPad Mini.

Samsung is most likely to introduce the Galaxy Note 8.0 at Mobile World Congress late next month.

More Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 details:

  • Codename: Kona
  • Dimensions: 211.3×136.3×7.95mm, 330 grams
  • GSM networks: EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) HSPA+21.1Mbps,
  • HSUPA 5.76Mbps (850/900/1900/2100)

AT&T offering $100 bill credit with Nexus 7 3G (Catch: 2-year contract)

nexus-7-3g-google-play-att-dealIn order to get some of the Nexus 7 3G buyers sign up for a two-year contract, US telecom operator AT&T is offering $100 bill credit. Even from the first look, it does not really look like a decent offer and is more like a rip-off.

If you grab a Nexus 7 3G from Google Play US (until Feb. 14, 2013), you will have an option to call-up AT&T and sign-up for a two-year contract with postpaid mobile share or standalone plans and you will get $100 in return as bill credit. The tablet will be needed to be bought from Google Play for the full price of $299.

To remind you, Nexus 7 3G is currently in stock at Google Play with 3-5 days of shipping time, so even though you might not want this offer, the tablet is still a great option for anyone looking to buy an Android tablet with on-the-go data connectivity.

Nexus 7 3G features a 7-inch 1280x800p display, Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB of internal storage, HSPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, Android 4.2.1 and front camera.

Next-gen iPad Mini, iPad launching in March: Report

ipad-mini_mainiPad launch rumours re back and now Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White has revealed in a research report that Apple might be planning to launch the next-generation iPad and new iPad Mini in March 2013, which seems possible considering all the iPads apart from 4th gen iPad and iPad Mini were announced around March.

He apparently got this idea from his observations and meetings at Consumer Electronics Show.

White wrote in his report:

Our checks at CES indicate Apple will release the iPad 5 and the second-generation iPad mini this March. The iPad 5 is expected to be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4 that was released in October, while the form factor of the iPad mini should be similar to the first generation iPad mini that debuted in October.

The fruity company, which has typically kept a yearly cycle of product launches, surprised many with the iPad Mini and 4th gen iPad release in October. It would be interesting to see if Apple launches next iPads in March, which will again be a short gap between last and new iPads, but it would again allow the company to get back on its usual March to March launch cycle or may be six-months gap is the new update cycle for the company.
